ADHD and Executive Functioning Coaching Practice
Hello, I’m Rachel. When my oldest child struggled with college during the pandemic, I felt helpless. During that time, I watched as students and young adults were paralyzed by the vast amounts of information coming toward them, uncertainty about the rapidly changing world, and the unknown outcomes of decisions they were expected to make. More than once, my child considered quitting school, primarily because he hadn’t developed the skills to process all the things facing him.
For awhile, I kept quiet and assumed he would “figure it out”. But, when he was entering his final semester and still wasn’t sure he could graduate, I jumped in. I couldn’t watch that same cycle of starting the semester strong, then getting overwhelmed and shutting down again! I set up weekly meetings with my child to walk through organizing and prioritizing all the things he was trying to navigate - school assignments, leadership responsibilities, relationships, not to mention all the “adulting” things.
During those meetings, we worked on taking a “big picture” and breaking it down into smaller sections. Focusing on fewer things at once didn’t feel as overwhelming or impossible and it allowed for consistent action toward completing everything.
Today, he’s a college graduate and I am using what I learned as a parent to teach others how to accomplish what matters most by directing their attention to teach others how to accomplish what matters most by directing their attention to fewer things at once.
