Tommy DeRamus Spotlight

Our Trustees not only support the Vestavia Hills Chamber as a whole, but the events that make the City of Vestavia Hills a unique and amazing place to work, play and live. These invaluable members make an annual commitment of support allowing the Chamber to carry out our mission: To serve and promote members and, together with community partners, advance the economic, civic, and educational environment of Vestavia Hills. We are excited to spotlight Trustee Tommy DeRamus of Shades Mountain Baptist Church.

Representing Shades Mountain Baptist Church as a Chamber Trustee is a part of my role at Shades that I really enjoy.  I’ve been on staff at Shades since July of 2019, but this is my first year to serve as a Trustee.  Our Chamber is focused on making Vestavia Hills a great place to live, work and play, and I am thankful to be able to be involved in those efforts with all our Chamber members.
Shades has a long history here in Vestavia Hills, and our church has been blessed to have pastors who recognize the importance of the church being a good citizen of the city.  Dr. Charles Carter and Dr. Danny Wood served as Senior Pastors at Shades for fifty years, and George Wright began his tenure as our Senior Pastor in September 2021.  I invite you to visit our website at and find out more about what we have to offer for you and your family.
Our mission statement is “Leveraging who we are and what we have been given for the sake of the gospel, wherever we are and wherever God takes us.”  We recognize that our mission starts at home, right here in Vestavia Hills.  We have a heart to serve our community and to open our doors to everyone.  As part of our Community Engagement Ministry we have volunteer teams that serve at Vestavia East, West and Dolly Ridge Elementary Schools and at Pizitz Middle School.  Our team members love serving the teachers and staff members at these schools!
I’ve been a resident of the Birmingham area since the early 1970’s and I am a graduate of the University of Alabama.  My wife Susan and I have been members of Shades since 2004, and Susan teaches 3rd graders in Sunday School.

Vestavia Hills is filled with great businesses and citizens that care about the quality of life in our city.  It’s an honor to be a part of our Chamber and to help facilitate events and activities that benefit all our residents.  I’m looking forward to the holiday season and another great year in 2023.
