Apr 1 Vulcan Keepsakes: Iron Man Memorabilia from the Birmingham Community
2014 marks 110 years since Birmingham’s colossal icon was cast from local iron to become the world’s largest cast-iron statue. To celebrate his amazing journey and history, Vulcan Park and Museum will present Vulcan Keepsakes: Iron Man Memorabilia from the Birmingham Community. The exhibition, running December 1, 2013 through August 17, 2014, will feature Vulcan souvenirs loaned to us by the local community as well as oral histories from citizens with unique stories to share. Vulcan’s 110-year history resides within quirky, curious keepsakes and the local people who witnessed significant moments from his past.

You can also bring your items and stories to Share Your History Day at Vulcan Center Museum on the first Wednesday of each month from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. and we will review Vulcan keepsakes for possible display.

Vulcan Park and Museum presents Share Your History Days. On the first Wednesday of the month from 1-5 p.m., VPMs Director of Education and Museum Specialist invite members of the community to contribute historical items, photos or oral histories concerning Birmingham and/or Vulcan history to be considered for future educational programs, exhibits and research. Items will be considered for accession or loan. Help us preserve the stories of Birmingham's unique past! If you have artifacts of interest for our upcoming exhibition featuring Birmingham's Italian Community, you can also bring those items by on the last Sunday of February - April from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m. For more information, please contact our Museum Specialist Lindsay Elliott at lelliott@visitvulcan.com, 205.933.1409 x. 29 or bring your items by during Share Your History Days and we will review them for possible display.

Apr 10 Birmingham Revealed Series - Sun Ra
Surely the most original citizen to ever come out of Birmingham, Sun Ra made his mark on a variety of fronts as a prolific writer and poet, through his psychedelic, space-age films and most notably, his eclectic, electric jazz music of the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. While his unorthodox lifestyle was a bit offbeat, his music found its groove, influencing such figures as George Clinton of P-Funk fame. To honor "the man from Saturn," the Birmingham Seven will perform original transcriptions from Su Ra's Magic City album in this retrospective of the legendary musician and Birmingham native.

Apr 29 Mayor's Prayer Breakfast 2014
This annual breakfast is one of the most well-attended and moving events in our city. At this event, dignitaries and local citizens come together to offer prayers for our world, country, state and city. This year we are honored to have Lisa "Roxanne" Richardson as our keynote speaker. Roxanne, as she is known to her listeners, is a radio and television veteran of over twenty years and is currently the co-host of 93.7 WDJC-FM's morning talk show. She is the Founding Board Member of Alabama's only 24-hour shelter for women seeking refuge from human trafficking and other forms of sexual exploitation, called The Wellhouse, Inc. This faith-based non-profit agency has received the FBI's Distinguished Leadership Award. Roxanne has an incredibly inspiring message to share.
